Hard Surface Polymer Coating

New Fluoride-Containing Monomers and Monomer-Based Polymer Materials to Coat Materials (Metals, Ceramics, Glass and Wood)

A technology for the potential application of fluoride-containing polymer materials to the production of coatings and films has been developed. In addition to maintaining in the new polymer materials all the properties inherent to fluoroplast, new properties non-characteristic to fluoroplast have been added and substantially intensified.

Basic raw materials for the production of the materials under discussion are perfluoroethylene, perfluoropropylene, perfluorocarbonic and sulfo-acids, spirits-telomers of the type H (CF2CF2) nCH2OH (n = 1-5), which are routinely produced by industrial plants and are readily available.

Properties

New monomers have been developed that, when subjected to this newly-developed polymerization technology, form fluoropolymers characterized by a number of new properties,e.g.: (i) increased adhesion to the material or substrate being coated; (ii) enhanced light transmission (about 99%); (iii) gas impermeability; (iv) enhanced dielectric properties; (v) resistance to solvents (thinners); (vi) low friction coefficient (dynamic friction coefficient equal to 0.18-0.26).

The newly developed polymers enable the introduction of new properties (including mechanical properties) into the polymer chain. Their production costs are much cheaper, since monomers are produced from easily accessible industrially-produced spirits-telomeres.

Physical and mechanical properties of such monomer-based polymers are at least equal, and in some cases better, than properties of the polymers being used currently. We have developed a coating application technology based on the use of polymer solution (as compared to the emulsion-based traditional approach) in the specially-developed organic solvent (thinner) that considerably simplifies the procedure of coatings' application.
