Lykocyanil S-A - Newly Developed Surgical Glue

Industry Sector: Medical

Purpose and Origin: The invention was developed by Prof. Henrich A. Tolstikov, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and his daughter, Dr. Tatiana H. Tolstikova, as a new generation of surgical glue.

Technical Detail: Lykocyanil S is an effective surgical glue producing films of high elasticity, providing for strong juncture bond and hermiciticity, with anti-neoplastic and anti-inflamatory properties, and stimulating reparative regeneration of tissue. The glue has also shown anti-bacterial and tumor growth inhibition properties. It has a "low" to "moderate" toxicity level, and a very high solubility. Its main ingredients are readily available worldwide in unlimited quantities, and can be produced from plant material. Production can be undertaken with standard/readily available pharmacological equipment, without the need for expensive new investment.

Potential Applications: Being an improvement on surgical glues already available and in use, Lycocyanil S can be applied wherever these glues are used today. Specifically, it is highly effective in abdominal, thoracic, ophthalmic, vascular and dento-facial surgery, onco-surgery, reconstruction surgery, and in any surgery with a high risk of post-operative bleeding and septic complications. Its ant-bacterial properties make it particularly attractive for use in low-sterility environments (wars, natural disaster areas, poor countries, etc..).

Market Potential: The current surgical glue market worldwide is over $1.5billion. Lycocyanil S will be a very strong entrant in this market, and should secure a substantial share of it.

Marketing Category: The technology has been fully tested in laboratory modes, and clinical testing on humans is ready to start. In view of the regulatory testing and validation processes associated with such technologies, it is likely that the invention will be licensed to one or more producers of surgical glues for their production and marketing.

Costs and Limitations: Production costs of Lycocyanil are currently estimated to be about 50% of those of other surgical glues. The current limitation on its application is the mandatory clinical testing process required by some Western countries (e.g. USA) before allowing its public use.

AlternativesTechnologies: Many surgical glues exist and are in regular use today. However, Lycocyanil S has a substantial advantage on all of them, both technically and in production cost.
